Communication & Connection with Spelling as Communication.
What is spelling as communication?
Spelling (or typing) as a form of communication teaches the purposeful motor skills needed to point to letters on an alphabet board. This allows an individual to spell their thoughts letter by letter, as a reliable form of communication.
Spelling/typing is an AAC teaching methodology that supports individuals who are nonspeaking, minimally speaking or unreliably speaking who spell or type to communicate. These individuals are often diagnosed with sensory-motor differences such as autism, apraxia, dyspraxia, sensory processing disorder, motor learning disorder, Down syndrome, etc.
Our mission.
Communication and connection are the key components to a life worth living. Our mission is to ensure nonspeaking/minimally speaking and unreliably speaking individuals have these opportunities by providing services for spelling as communication, supporting regulation, and developing motor skill acquisition. We advocate for and support self-advocacy efforts to advance accessibility and commit to the education and vision of an autonomous life for all individuals.
Non-speaking vs non-thinking- what does it mean? As a non-speaker, it means everything. I have no speech at my disposal, but my thoughts are greatness abound. They are abstract, robust, and beyond the comprehension of most. For the first 13 years of my life, most everyone doubted my intelligence. It wasn't until my mom was introduced to Spelling to Communicate (S2C) that my cognitive ability was not only noticed but celebrated and accepted.
